Ten students sick due to lightning in Mehendiganj

Ten students of Darichar Khajuria Secondary School became sick due to lightning near the school in Mehendiganj Upazila of Barishal on Monday .
Headmaster Dwipak Kumar Roy said that it started raining during classes around 12 noon. Ten students were injured in the class room of seventh graders in the tin-shed building of the school due to sudden lightning. Everyone else was more or less terrified.
He said, first aid was given to 10 injured students. Later, when the parents of the students were informed and they took the nine students to home.
Besides seriously ill Robin, a seven grader of the school and son of Muhammad Ershad of Khajuria village under Mehendiganj upazila, admitted with upazila health complex.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Mehendiganj Police Station Shafiqul Islam said that a police team has been sent to the spot after receiving the information.
However, the condition of none of the students is serious.
The assistant headmaster also said that heavy rain and thunder storm was started in the area in morning. Later around 12 noon there was lightning somewhere around the school. Eight students fainted due to convulsions immediately after the loud thunder and flashing lights. Two other students were also seen with burn marks on their hands.
After giving first aid to the students, they recovered from their sickness, rest Robin was admitted to the health complex as he was unwell.
Mehendiganj Upazila Health Complex Resident Officer Dr. Abdullah Al Maruf said that the students had convulsions because of the loud noise. In the meantime, Robin’s fear and panic is not overcome, his seizures are more. But after giving him treatment, he would also be well within short time.
