State minister for posts and telecommunications Tarana Halim on Thursday indicated that Teletalk would face hardship to retain existing customers if necessary investment is not made for its development, especially network expansion.
“…it’s true and we have to accept it that if we fail to increase investment, at least for network, Teletalk would face challenges to retain customers,” she added.
The state minister came up with this observation while opening customer care centers of the state-own mobile phone operator in Naogaon, Chapainawabganj and Joypurhat through video conference at her ministry office.
She revealed Teletalk has taken a project for network expansion with Taka 675 crore which has already been approved by the ECNEC but “the operator is being faced stumble for not yet disbursing the money”. The operator has now a total of 3,700 base transceiver stations (BTSs) for 2G and 3G operation. Mentioning that another 100 BTSs would be added soon, Tarana said “it does not seem understandable to me that how Teletak would compete in the market where the top operator has 12,000 BTSs.”
“Network is not a magic . . . it needs money for network and this is the reality,” said the state minister citing that Teletalk started its journey with Taka 673 crore in 2005 and it’s so tough for the operator to survive with little amount of investment.
