Staff Reporter :
The water level of the River Teesta was flowing above the danger level on Thursday due to heavy downpour and onrush of water from the hilly areas of the upstream.
“The water level was increased in Dalia point of the Teesta barrage in Nilphamari since the morning at 10:00 am and it was flowing 10 centimeter above the danger level since 3:00pm,” said Nurul Islam, official of Water Development Board in Dalia office.
Peoples’ representatives from different areas of Nilphamari said that the water level was rising in different areas of the district due to the rise in Teesta water.
They said that water has started rising in 15 river side villages including Purbachatnai, Tepakharibari, Khagakharibari, Khalisha Chapani,
Jhunagach Chapani of Dimla upazila, Shaulmari and Dauabari union of Jaldhaka upazila.
Meanwhile, about 44 sluice gates of the Teesta Barrage have been kept open to control the flow of water, sources said.
Earlier, officials from the Water Development Board said that a short term flood may take place in Teesta Basin due to upstream’s heavy rain.
Short term flood may have to take place in the Teesta river basin as the upstream part in the neighboring India has faced serious flood now.
Bangladesh and neighboring India’s meteorological departments said that there is a chance of medium to heavy rainfall in the upstream part of the Teesta (Sikkim, Gangtok) in the next 48-72 hours.
As a result, the water level of the Teesta, Dharla and Dudhkumar rivers basin may rise rapidly during the next 48 to 72 hours.
Meanwhile, Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre said also that there is no possibility of flooding in the other river basins though water levels are on rise in different rivers.
When contacted, Md. Arifuzzaman Bhuyan, Executive Engineer, Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre, Bangladesh Water Development Board, told The New Nation on Tuesday, “Though water levels are on rise in Padma and Jamuna rivers, it is still below the danger level.”
He said as the Himachal and adjacent areas are facing worse flood situation, the Teesta basin of our side also may face a short term
