Teesta renders homeless over 50 families in Rangpur

Erosion by the river Teesta rendered over 50 families homeless at Paikan and Chilkhal area under Gangachara upazila in Rangpur district during last few days.
Due to erosion caused by heavy rainfall and onrush of water, the ferocious river has also devoured crop fields, vegetable gardens and other farmlands under the areas.
The most affected villages are Paikan Hazipra, , Char Chilkhal, Soudpara, of the upazila. The existence of a number of public institutions, establishments including school, madrasah, post office and farmlands, homesteads are now under the threat of extinction.
While visiting some of the affected areas on Sunday this correspondent found a number of villagers taking shelter on the embankment and roads. Many dwellers said they have been passing days in anxiety.
Rabbani (40), a victim of Chilkhal village under the upazila said that Teesta devoured his house leaving him a Pauper. Besides 40 decimals of his crop lands were engulfed by the river, he lamented.
A large number of victims said that Teesta devoured everything on its bank and they hardly could save their household belongings from the erosion of the river.
The homeless families said that they have been suffering much due to lack of food and shelter but have not been getting any help from the government. They apprehended that erosion in adjacent areas might be deteriorated.
Locals alleged that they have informed the higher authorities of the problems but no steps have so far been taken in this regard.
Former UP Chairman of Chilkhal Union Parishad Nurul Huda said Erosion by the mighty river Teesta has taken a serious turn during last few days, posing serious threat to many valuable establishments in different villages under the upazila. He apprehended if the erosion continuous for few more days Chilkhal Government Primary School may go under water.
In this situation the people of the areas have made a fervent appeal to the government to take immediate measures to save their lives and properties from erosion.
