The river Teesta is flowing over the danger level in the district flooding 40 villages of different upazilas till Tuesday afternoon.
Executive engineer of Teesta Barrage Project Mahbubur Rahman told BSS the river was flowing 16 to 20 centimeters over the danger mark at Dalia and Kawnia points during last 24 hours. “The onrush of Indian hilly waters and incessant rainfall caused the sudden rise of the water level and new areas of the district are being submerged in every hour,” Rahaman said adding that navigation is also a problem of this river. He said they had opened up 44 gates of the barrage aimed at releasing water towards downstream and hoped the flow level would come down within next 24 hours.
When contacted, deputy commissioner M Habibur Rahman said he asked the UNOs concerned to make lists of the affected people and preparation is going on to provide them with all possible assistance.
