A teenage girl was held hostage and raped by two men on a bus in Khagrachhari.
Police raided the bus terminal in Khagrachhari on Saturday morning and arrested transport worker Kamal Mizi, son of Ali Ahmed of Khagrachhari Sadar, and bus mechanic Rafiqul Islam, son of late Abdul Hamid of Madhabpur upazila in Habiganj.
Two buses used in the incident were also seized.
A case has been filed by the teenager’s father with Khagrachhari Sadar police station.
According to police sources, the rape survivor went out of her house – located in the district’s Gugrachhari area – on Friday night following a quarrel with her family members.
The arrestees reportedly kidnapped and then gang-raped the girl on a bus parked in the terminal area at around 3am on Saturday.
Ratan Tripura, a leader of the Khagrachhari Bus-Minibus Workers Union, said: “Like others, the driver of the bus in question left for home amid the nationwide Covid lockdown which started on July 1.
“The helper of the bus along with another person are responsible for the gang-rape incident.”
Confirming the matter to Dhaka Tribune, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Khagrachhari Sadar police station Muhammad Rashid said police arrested the two after receiving a complaint from the family of the survivor.
“The accused have been sent to the court,” the OC said, adding that the teenager has been sent to a local hospital for a medical examination.
