Upazila administration has saved a schoolgirl from child marriage at Bahubol upazila in Habiganj district on Friday night.
She is identified as Jhuma Akther, 14, a class eight student of Jagatpur High School in the upazila, and a resident of the area.
School sources said, Jhuma’s father Abdul Mojid arranged her marriage with Sahed Miah, 38, a man of Jagatpur village. On information, Upazila administration rushed to the spot on Friday around 8pm and tried to make her mother understand about the bad effect of child marriage.
Realising the matter, Abdul Mojid cancelled the marriage.
“I could not protest their decision,” said Jhuma Akther, who told The New Nation on Saturday.
Saiful Islam, Bahubal Upazila Nirbahi officer confirmed the matter to The New Nation.
