Law enforcers along with friends and family members have paid homage to the victims of the Holey Artisan attack by laying floral wreaths on the then bakery premises marking the third anniversary of the brutal attack.
Chief of Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) Unit Monirul Islam, Director General of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) Benazir Ahmed and a team of Dhaka Metropolitan Police also placed floral wreaths on the premises.
On Monday morning, the two-storey building, which remains closed to public, had families and friends of the victim, along with diplomats from the embassies of Japan and Italy, and members of law enforcement agencies, stoically pay their respects and grieve for the deceased. Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) Chief Monirul Islam, addressing the press on Monday, said, “Some of the new JMB members died during the raid and we have arrested the rest of them. They are on trial now and will soon be punished. Only then will the families of the victims have some peace. We are putting all our efforts to prevent anything like this happen ever again.”
When asked about Bangladeshi militants in Syria, the CTTC chief said: “We have identified all of them and most of them have died in the war.”
Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) Director General Benazir Ahmed said: “Nowadays, internet and
social media are driving people towards militancy and forcing them onto illegal paths.
“We have to be always alert to defeat militancy. It is just not ours, but a global problem as 129 militant attacks happened in Europe in 2018,”the DG claimed.
Earlier on July 1, 2016, five armed militants stormed the upscale eatery in the diplomatic zone back and held the diners hostage before brutally killing 20 of them — three Bangladeshis, seven Japanese, nine Italians and one Indian.
Two police officials were also killed during the 12-hour standoff.
A case was filed with Gulshan police under the Anti-Terrorism Act following the terror attack accusing a faction of the local JMB outfit.
After over two years of investigation, the Counter Terrorism and Trans-national Crime (CTTC) unit of DMP submitted a charge sheet to a Dhaka court on July 23 last year, accusing eight militants.
