Police arrested the wife of a college teacher from Kheyaghatpara area of the district town on Monday night for allegedly torturing her domestic help.
The arrestee was identified Qamrunnahar Mousumi, 26, wife of Imam Hossain, 35, an associate professor of the
History Department of Government Shaheed Bulbul College.
Police and locals said Taslima Khatun, 22, had been working as the domestic help at the house of Imam for the last several months. But his wife Mousumi used to torture her frequently on lame excuses.
Taslima did not return home after she went out of the house for dumping waste at dustbin in the morning of July 11. Imam filed a general diary (GD) with Sadar Police Station on the same day in this connection.
On Monday night, locals noticed injured and unfed Taslima groaning in a nearby road. Later, they rescued the girl and took her to Imam’s house.
Being informed, a team of police launched a drive at the house of Imam on that night and picked the couple up. However, police freed the college teacher after a while.
Mousumi was sent to jail on Tuesday after a case was filed against her, said officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station Ahsanul Haque. Meanwhile, Mousumi and her husband Imam denied their allegation brought against them.
