SUST still tense: Teachers demand VC’s removal

A section of teachers of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) under the banner of ‘Mohan Muktijuddher Chetonay Udbuddho Shikshok Forum’ continued their demonstrations against Vice-Chancellor Professor Aminul Haque Bhuiyan on Saturday demanding his removal.
The agitating teachers laid siege to the office of the VC for the fifth consecutive days yesterday. Convener of the platform, Professor Syed Shamsul Alam, said that they would continue their protest until the VC quits.
On Thursday, the platform published a white paper on the corruption committed by the VC. Meanwhile, another section of Pro-Awami League teachers under the banner of ‘Mohan Muktijudder Chetona O Mukto Chintay Oikkaboddho Shikhakbrindo, took stand in favour of the VC. They said that they would protect the VC at any cost as he had been appointed by the government. They said the university authorities were observing university’s situation. They would take steps to keep congenial atmosphere on the campus.
Convenor of the platform Aktarul Islam said that a meeting was held on Wednesday. The agitating teachers were asked to withdraw the movement from the meeting.
The Mohan Muktijuddher Chetonay Udbuddho Shikshok Forum has been observing agitation programmes since Monday when VC Aminul Haque Bhuiyan came to join his office after a two-month long leave.
On April 23, Vice-Chancellor Prof Aminul Haque Bhuiyan went on a two-month leave amid demand for his resignation. The decision was taken in a syndicate meeting. The tension was erupted on April 13 when 19 teachers from the physics department and geography and environment department of the university went to hold a talk with the VC over space allocation between the departments on April 13.
Prof Dr Syed Badiuzzaman Faruque, head of the physics department, and Prof Dr Sharif Md Sharafuddin, head of the geography and environment science department, resigned the same day following an altercation with the VC.
On April 20, thirty-five teachers resigned from different administrative posts demanding removal of university vice-chancellor. The teachers include Institute of Information Technology Director Prof Dr Muhammad Jafar Iqbal, Centre for Excellence Director Prof Dr Muhammad Yunus, Public Administration Department Head Prof Dr Abdul Awal Biswas, Students Guidance and Council Director Prof Dr Anwarul Islam and acting proctor Emdadul Haque.
