Commemorating the martyrdom of former teacher of Chemistry Department of Rajshahi University (RU) Prof Dr Shamsuzzaoha, the Teachers’ Day was observed on the campus with due respect recently.
The day’s programme began with hoisting black flags atop the Sayed Nazrul Islam Administrative Buildings and other academic buildings at sunrise.
RU Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof Dr M Abdus Sobhan, Pro Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Anada Kuamr Saha, RUET VC Rafiqul Islam Sheikh, Public Relation Officer Prof Dr Provash Kumar Karmaker and other top officials and teachers of the university placed floral wreath at the grave of Prof Shamsuzzoha. They observed one minute silence there.
Later, different residential halls including Shaheed Shamsuzzoha Hall, different departments, political and socio-cultural organizations of the university placed floral wreaths at grave of the Shaheed Zoha.
Besides, several rallies were brought out on the campus to mark the day. A discussion programme was held at Tajuddin Senate Bhaban where Prof Md Belayet Hossain, Chairman of Chemistry Department was in the chair.
 The day long programme also included- Quran Khani, Milad Mahfil and offering special prayer at university central mosque after Zohr prayer, another discussion meeting at Shaheed Shamsuzzoha Hall, candle lighting etc.
Martyrs Memorial Archive of the university was remain open for the visitors on that day. It is noted that Prof Dr Shamsuzzoha, the then Chemistry Department teacher and also the Proctor of RU, was killed by the Pakistani Military forces near main entrance of the university during the mass upsurge of East Pakistan on 18 February 1969, while he was trying to save some of his agitating students.
Since then, February 18 has been commemorated at Rajshahi University as the “Teachers’ Day” (formerly Zoha Day) every year.
