One more young man has to die a prematured death as he was killed in the infight of the students wing of the rulers at SUST, Sylhet on Thursday. The culture of intimidation and violence across the country, mainly on campuses of universities and colleges, run by ruling party student body Bangladesh Chhatra League must be banned immediately to sustain the fragile image of the ruler. The BCL infightings paralyzed Chittagong University earlier this month, injured eight BCL men on Tuesday at Dinajpur Medical College and such stories are happening on routine basis. The mayhem brought by the student organization shames the conscious people as it mires the legacy of student organization. The people feel that BCL are above the laws. Immediately after of any clash, the BCL high-ups suspend
some leaders and activists, but after couple of months they are found active in party activities, though police could not find them, which explicitly exposes the government’s toleration towards miscreants and thugs as they are affiliated with the ruling class.
Most dailies reported that the rival groups were locked into running battles and clashes at different points of the campus and activists of both sides were carrying sharp weapons and sticks; some were seen wielding small firearms while police were bystander which arises the question about the very role of the police. Following the clash, the authorities were bound to close the university for an indefinite period, suspending all academic activities.
On Tuesday, factional clash between two groups of BCL injured eight at Dinajpur Medical College over dispute centring committee formation of the organization. Media reports said both the factions armed with sharp weapons engaged in a clash and vandalized the medical college hostel that prompted the authorities to impose ban on student politics at the college campus for the next three months. Police also seized machetes, pangas, knives, iron rod and different indigenous arms from the possession of the future physicians. Similar incidents occurred at Sher-e-Bangla-Agri-University on Thursday in Dhaka.
And at Chittagong University, hundreds of students could not attend classes and examinations earlier this month as a BCL faction barricaded Sholoshahar Railway Station, the place in the Port city where most students aboard the shuttle train for the campus. All academic activities are suspended there.
In almost all the violence and misdeeds that happen in public universities, the party activist students are directly involved. Those who come to university for higher education they are disappointed because such thuggery and violence are harming the academic atmosphere. Universities cannot be dominated by those dangerous elements and killers under the pretext of party activists enjoying police protection if they are of the party in power. Not only some students who join as party activists for enjoying personal benefits, some teachers including vice-chancellors are also found busy as party activists for personal gains. Such teachers and vice-chancellors cannot be helpful for maintaining proper atmosphere for education. They do not enjoy respect of the general students.
It is a shame and disgrace that the teachers and the vice-chancellors do not care for maintaining healthy academic atmosphere at the universities, knowing how vile and disruptive our party politics is.
Party politics must be banned at the universities both for the teachers and the students. It is to be unhappily noted that only in the state run universities’ students and teachers are divided for party politics. Again it is at public universities that armed confrontations take place every now and then. General students who are anxious for good education suffer most.
We feel strongly that to save higher education both the teachers and the students are to be legally prohibited from becoming party activists. If so desire, let them leave public universities and be full time party activists. The people do not spend their money for producing thugs and killers under the cover of university education.
