Academic activities at the government primary schools in the district are being badly hampered due to acute crisis of teachers.
Sources said a total of 1606 posts-683 posts of headmasters and 924 of assistant teacher-are lying vacant in 1996 government primary schools and nationalised schools in the district.
Senior assistant teachers are now working as ‘acting headmaster’ of the schools and most of the time they remain busy in administrative works, hampering the educational activities in the schools.
District primary education office sources said posts for 20 headmasters and 56 assistant teachers are lying vacant in Adarsha upazila while 26 headmasters and 19 assistant teachers in Sadar Dakkhin upazila, 70 headmaster and 61 assistant teachers in Chouddagram upazila, 60 headmaster and 99 teachers in Nangolkot upazila, 22 headmaster and 57 assistant teachers in Laksham and 43 headmaster and 105 assistant teachers in Monoharganj upazila.
Besides, the posts of 62 headmaster and 45 assistant teachers are lying vacant in Barura upazila while 26 teachers and nine headmasters in Burichang upazila, 35 headmasters and 38 teachers in Brahmanpara upazila, 56 headmaster and 119 teachers in Daudkandi, 32 headmasters and 44 teachers in Chandina upazila, 42 headmasters and 51 teachers in Debidwar upazila, 68 headmaster and 115 teachers in Muradnagar upazila, 29 headmaster and 37 assistant teachers in Homna upazila, 36 headmasters ad 42 eachers in Titash upazila and 23 headmaster and 18 teachers in Meghna upazila.
Nizamul Haq, a guardian, said the primary education is the basic of all education. He urged the authorities concerned to take necessary steps to ensure proper education of primary level students through appointment of necessary teachers.
District Education Officer Nurul Islam said many posts of headmasters are lying vacant as some of them went on retirement. However, process is going on to promote the assistant teachers to the posts of headmasters which will help to solve the crisis.
He also hoped that the ministry concerned will soon take necessary step to fill up the vacant posts of teachers.
