Tea workers’ daily wage set at Tk170 after meeting with PM

The daily wages of the tea garden workers have been increased to Tk 170 from Tk 120 amid their ongoing demonstration across the country.
The announcement came after a meeting between the Prime Minister and the tea garden owners’ organization Bangladesh Tea Association (BTA) at the PM’s official Ganabhaban residence on Saturday.
Prime Minister’s Principal Secretary Ahmed Kaykaus confirmed the matter to the reporters after the meeting on Saturday evening (August 27).
He said, after discussing everything, the Prime Minister fixed the daily wage of tea workers at Tk170.
From 9 to 11 August, the labourers held two-hour work abstinence every day. Earlier, On August 9, tea workers of 167 tea gardens of the country started their movement demanding Tk 300 as wages.
The workers’ leaders talked to the tea workers for several days, but no positive outcome was found.
Amidst the agitation of the tea workers, the tea garden owners offered to increase the wages by Tk 25 taka to Tk 145, but they did not return to work.
The workers demanded Tk 300 as wages per day instead of the current Tk120.
