The Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) will start selling essentials in open market in port city from May 15.
A total of 10 trucks of TCB will be deployed for selling the essentials at different points under the Open Market Sell (OMS) program in port city.
According to sources, OMS rice and other essentials selling will start in port city from May 15 to control the price hike of essentials. Under the OMS program, rice and other essentials including oil, flours, sugar etc will be sold at 10 spots of the city. The areas of the city including Andarkilla, Chhotopool, New market, Agrabad, Press Club, New Market and Bahaddarhat will distribute the rice and other essentials at low price from May 15, just before starting Ramzan.
District Food Controller of Chittagong sources said, “People will be able to buy a maximum of five-kg from 30 trucks every day, except Fridays and Tuesdays. Each truck will contain four tons of rice.”Chief of the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) in Chittagong Jamal Ahmed said, 10 trucks have already been appointed for selling the essentials in port city to control the price hike during holly Ramzan.
Sources said, prices of essentials went up this month ahead of Ramzan in port city. The retailers are increasing prices slowly as the monitoring teams of the district administration and other authorities including the Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) are yet to be active. But, the consumers alleged that the prices of essentials have hiked since last week of the April for upcoming Ramzan.
The price of sugar and gram is hiking every day. In last days the price of sugar was Tk 2130 per maund at Khatongonj wholesale markets, but the price went up Tk 2300 per maund. Similarly, the price of gram was Tk 2600 per maund at Khatongonj wholesale markets, but the gram is selling Tk 3000 per maund. Besides, the prices of other essentials are also hiking every day at the advent of Ramadan.
According to the sources in Chittagong Custom House, the importers imported a total of 2, 53000 MT gram last year while the demand of gram in a year in Bangladesh is 1, 44000 MT. Moreover, the importers also imported 56000 MT gram in January. So, there is no chance of shortage of gram in local market.
Former Mayor of Chittagong City Corporation and President of Chittagong City Awami League A B M Mohiuddin Chowdhury expressed deep concern over the price hike of essentials ahead of Ramzan.
Mohiuddin Chowdhury said there is no shortage of essentials in Bangladesh now. The import is adequate for meeting the demand. But, some dishonest businessmen are making syndicates for hiking prices. He urged the government, administration and law enforcing agencies to start market monitoring and controlling the price hike.
Meanwhile, several agencies of government is investigating about the unwanted price hike of essentials including the gram and sugar. According to the agencies, president of Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) Mahabubul Alam and his three brothers are controlling the whole sale markets at Khatungonj and the traders alleged that the price of essentials at wholesale markets in Chittagong went up due to high price of dollar.
