Staff Reporter :The Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) have started selling onion at Tk 50 per kg in open trucks across the country from Tuesday.The TCB has taken the decision in view of sale of onion at Tk 80 to 70 per kilo for over one month. The onion price during the Eid-ul-Fitr was Tk 45 per kilo.It soared to Tk 90 per kilogram by the end of last month after India increased the export price by $275 per tonne to boost supply in the country’s own markets.Amid the spiral of onion prices here, TCB floated tenders on August 24 to buy 550 tonnes of imported onions for sole in the domestic market.According to data of Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics and the National Board of Revenue, Bangladesh consumes nearly 2.1 million tonnes of onion a year, of which 0.5-0.8 million tonnes are imported, mainly from IndiaApart from onion, TCB is also selling sugar at Tk 37 per kg and soybean oil at Tk 89 per litre. Each buyer is entitling to maximum 4 kilogram of sugar, 2 kilogram onions and 10 litres of soybean oil.As many as 173 trucks have been stationed 24 points in the capital, 10 in Chittagong, five each in the divisional headquarters and two each in the district headquarters to sell the items.
