Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) sold nearly 2.34 lakh tonnes of essential goods between March 2020 and May 2021 at subsidised prices as part of the government’s move to help the low-income group amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
The corporation sold seven items — soybean oil, sugar, onion, pulse, chickpea, potato, and dates – to 3.33 crore families, which benefitted 13.33 crore people, said a press release.
The initiative helped the products markets remain stable in the pandemic crisis, as well, it added.
“All the products prices were at an affordable level in the last one year and did not see unexpected hikes except edible oil price,” reads the release, citing the commerce ministry analysis.
However, the edible oil prices increased due to hikes in global markets, the release said, adding that Bangladesh was heavily dependent on imports for the essential item.
