Business Desk :
The Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) will start selling onions from Sunday at fair prices to curb market volatility. The state-owned marketing company will sell onions at Tk30 per kg in different parts of the country, including Dhaka.
For the last two weeks, due to a rise in the price of onions in India, local markets have been selling onions at a higher than normal price. One has to spend about Tk60-65 to buy one kg of local onions, while it costs Tk50-55 to purchase imported onions.
Amid this instability in the onion market, the Commerce Ministry directed the TCB to sell onions from the 13th of September.
Humayun Kabir, an information officer at the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) told the reporter, “TCB will sell a total of four products including onions across the country from today.” According to TCB sources, it will sell various products in 275 trucks across the country.
Of these, 40 trucks are allocated to Dhaka, 10 in Chattogram, seven in Rangpur, five in Mymensingh, three in Rajshahi, five in Khulna, five in Barishal, five in Sylhet, five in Bogura, five in Cumilla, three in Jhenaidah, and three in Madaripur.
Apart from this, TCB will also sell products in some trucks at the upazila level.
A buyer can purchase two kg onions at a time from a TCB truck. The company will also sell sugar, lentils, and soybean oil. A buyer can purchase two kg sugar and two kg lentils at Tk50 per kg and two to five litres of soybean oil at Tk80 per litre.
