Court Correspondent :
A Dhaka court on Thursday cancelled the bail of Tazreen Fashions’ Chairman Mahmuda Akter Mita in a case filed in connection with the devastating fire in the factory in 2012. Judge Md Abdul Majid of Dhaka’s District and Sessions Judge’s Court passed the order and asked Mahmuda Akter to surrender to the trial court within 15 days.
On February 10, Dhaka’s Senior Judicial Magistrate Ismail Hossain granted Mahmuda conditional bail for one month after she with her husband and Managing Director (MD) of the company Delwar Hossain surrendered to a court in connection with the November 24, 2012 fire. Meanwhile, the court also issued show cause notices to Dhaka’s Chief Judicial Magistrate Ismail Hossain and Senior Judicial Magistrate Tajul Islam for the procedural mistake in the order of sending both Mahmuda and Delwar to jail.
The couple surrendered to the court on February 9 and prayed for bail, while Senior Judicial Magistrate Tajul Islam rejected their bail petitions and sent them to jail.
The next day, Dhaka’s Chief Judicial Magistrate Ismail Hossain granted Mahmuda one month’s interim bail but rejected Delwar’s bail. However, the prosecution later sought scrapping of Mahmuda’s bail. On December 31, last year, a Dhaka court issued warrants of arrest against six persons of Tazreen Fashions, including its Chairman Mita and MD Delwar, in connection with the fire incident in the garment factory in 2012.
On December 22, police submitted the charge sheet against 13 people, including Mita and Delwar of the factory for the devastating fire in the factory.
At least 112 people were killed and over 200 others suffered injury in the fire that raged through the Tazreen Fashioons at Nischintapur in Ashulia on the outskirts of capital Dhaka on November 24, 2012. On November 25 of the same year, a case was filed with Ashulia Police Station in connection with the fire. Later, the case was transferred to CID.
