Tawfiq for setting small power plants by using modular reactors

Prime Minister’s Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Adviser Dr Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury, Bir Bikram, on Thursday urged the Science and Technology Ministry to look into whether small power plants can be set up utilizing small modular reactors or not.
“Bangladesh Energy and Power Research Council can help if any such research in this regard is needed,” he said this, while speaking as the chief guest at a seminar at Biduyt Bhaban here.
Bangladesh Energy and Power Research Council organised the seminar “An Overview of Nuclear Energy and Development Status of Innovative Reactors”.
Former Chairman of Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission M Ali Zulkarnain and former Professor of BUET MA Rashid Sarkar jointly presented the keynote paper.
Addressing the seminar as the special guest, State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid said, “We need uninterrupted power supply and the nuclear power plants will contribute to fulfill the demand for electricity.”
He said the country’s progress could be ensured by using nuclear power peacefully.
Science and Technology Secretary M Anwar Hossain made it clear about the safety of Rooppur nuclear power plant, adding, “Russia would take back all nuclear wastage along with training and research materials.”
Among others, Energy Division Secretary Abu Hena M Rahmatul Munim, Chairman of Bangladesh Energy and Power Research Council Shahin Chowdhury, Chairman of Bangladesh Power Development Board Khaled Mahmood and Power Cell Director General Mohammad Hossain spoke at the seminar.
