The High Court Division of the Supreme Court yesterday rejected a petition filed by MA Matin, brother of BNP leader MA Qaiyum, an accused in the case filed in connection with the murder of Italian citizen Ceasre Tavella.
Matin lodged the petition challenging the trial proceedings of the murder case. The High Court order cleared the way for the sub-ordinate court to proceed with the trial proceedings of the case.
The High Court bench of Justice
Md Shawkat Hossain and Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder passed the rejection order as there were specific allegations about Qaiyum’s involvement in the killing.
Cesare Tavella, an aid worker, was killed in the capital’s diplomatic Gulshan area on September 28, 2015. The murder case was filed with Gulshan Police Station the same day.
On June 28, last year, police submitted the charge sheet of the case against seven persons, including Qaiyum and his brother Abdul Matin. Qaiyum is a leader of BNP’s Dhaka city unit.
