Defying the fake currency identifying machines in cattle markets and shopping centers, various gangs of racketeers have plotted to disburse fake currency notes in cattle markets on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha, Detective Branch sources said.
“It has been learnt that the fake currency syndicates had held a secret meeting and appointed 16 agents to
circulate the fake currency notes throughout the country, they said.
More than eight persons were arrested along with Tk 49 lakh fake notes and huge number of fake note making instruments from the city in the last two days, said a DB high official.
The DB personnel have already seized some fake currency notes from cattle markets. It was found that the syndicates had preferred making fake Tk 1,000 notes, he said.
Joint-Commissioner of the DB Monirul Islam told The New Nation on Thursday that they had received the information prior to the launch of our anti-forgery drive ahead of Eid.
“We fear that the circulation of these fake currency notes will affect the law and order situation in the capital’s 19 cattle markets, the DB man said. Around Tk 6,500 crore may be transacted this year marking the Eid. Of this amount, Tk 195 crore will go to the cattle market leaseholders. Transaction of such a huge amount of money is nothing new in Dhaka city, he said. “As many as 20 syndicates are involved with making and circulating forged currency notes across the country. These racketeers always prefer taking advantage of festivals, as huge crowds swarm into at shopping malls and cattle markets,” the official said.
The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Chief Executive Estate Officer Aminul Islam told The New Nation on Thursday that machines to detect illegal currency notes were being set up in every cattle market in the capital and on its outskirts. Police have bought some of the instruments and other necessary equipment will be provided by Bangladesh Bank and Federation of Chambers and Commerce and Industries (FBCCI) for smooth dealings at all cattle markets.
He said that at least 42 illegal currency notes detective machines were set up in the capital’ cattle markets.
