N-ganj 7 murder: Tareque, Purnendu file petition against death penalty

Former RAB-11 Commander Tareque Sayeed and Sub-Inspector of Police Purnendu Bala, both are death row convicts, on Tuesday filed appeal petition with the High Court (HC) challenging the death penalty awarded to them by a trial court in Narayanganj seven murder case.
Ahsan Ullah, a lawyer for Tareque, confirmed the news to the reporters. He submitted a petition with the High Court seeking acquittal of the forced-retired lieutenant colonel.
Earlier on Monday, Nur Hossain, a death row convict and expelled leader of Narayanganj Awami
League, challenged the death penalty awarded to him in the same case.
On January 16, Narayanganj District and Sessions Judge’s Court found 35 people, including 25 former RAB officials and Nur Hossain, guilty of abduction and murder of seven people and destroying evidence.
The court handed down death penalty to 26 people, including Nur Hossain and 16 former RAB men, and jailed nine other accused for various terms, from seven to 17 years.
