Family members of a Jubo Dal leader who was shot dead by Rab members last year on Tuesday blamed former Rab-11 commanding officer Lt Col Tarek Sayeed Mahmud for the murder and demanded his trial in this connection.
Speaking at a press conference at her house in the district town’s Hospital Road area, Monwara Begum, wife of Iqbal Mahmud Jewel, said former Rab official Tareq and his associates shot her husband dead in Chawkbazar area on December 12 last year.
She said the Rab members had launched a drive at the residence of district BNP general secretary Sahabuddin Sabu at Uttar Temuhani in the town on the day. As the news spread around, local Jubo Dal members, including Jewel, moved towards the house of Sabu in a procession.
However, the Rab men intercepted the procession in Chawkbazar area where they also opened fire on them, killing Jewel on the spot. The Rab personnel later dragged Jewel’s body into their vehicle, she said quoting witnesses. “There has been no trace of him since then.”
Monwara also alleged that the local police station did not record any case in this regard although she approached it several times. Making an appeal to the Prime Minister to return the body of her husband, she said, “As you can offer fateha at your father’s grave, so want my children to do.”
Three Rab-11 officials-Lt Col Tarek Sayeed Mahmud, Maj Arif Hossain and Lt Commander MM Rana-were sent on forced retirement following the allegations of their involvement in the killing of seven people, including Narayanganj panel mayor Nazrul Islam and senior lawyer Chandan Kumar Sarker.
