Tarana vows win-win environment in telecom sector

State Minister for Posts and Telecommunication Division Tarana Halim yesterday said she wants to create investment friendly industry where every party would be in a win-win position.
“I want to establish a win-win atmosphere in the industry through minimizing existing problems . . . you (operators) have to create pro-people telecom sector,” she added.
The newly appointed state minister came up with the assurance at the first meeting with the Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) and representatives of country’s cellular phone operators at her ministry office. She said: “There are few problems in the sector, but our goal is to establish Digital Bangladesh and all has to work in combine towards attaining the target.”
Expressing her position regarding corruption as “zero tolerance”, Tarana Halim said: “I want to make the ministry corruption free. If you have any complain about corruption, please inform me and assist me towards building a corruption free ministry.” At the view exchange meeting, the operators sought her attention by raising different problems including high taxation, SIM tax, technology neutrality and competitive atmosphere.
Assuring them (operators), the state minister said she would take all the initiatives through consultation with the stakeholders in the sector. Post and Telecommunication Division Secretary M Faizur Rahman Chowdhury, BTRC Chairman Sunil Kanti Bose, Grameenphone CEO Rajeev Shethi, Banglalink CEO Ziad Shatara, Robi Managing Director and CEO Supun Weerasinghe, and representatives of Airtel, Citycell and Teletalk, among others, were present at the meeting.
