Voting for the by-election to Tangail-8 (Basail-Sakhipur) constituency is going on peacefully today (Saturday). The voting began at 8.00 am and will continue nonstop until 4.00 pm. The parliamentary seat fell vacant following the death of Awami League MP Shawkat Momen Shajahan on January 20. Five candidates-Shawkat Momen’s son Anupam Shahjahan of the ruling Awami League, Sadek Siddiqui of JP (Manju), independent Abdul Malek (AL rebel), Principal Abu Sayeed and Liaqat Ali- are competing in the election. The constituency has a total of 307,382 voters, including 145,576 men and 161,806 women. The election commission has set up 711 booths at 117 polling stations.
