Staff Reporter :
The by-election of Tangail-4 constituency will be held on March 20 that was announced by the Election Commission (EC) on Sunday.
“The candidates can now start campaigning,” Assistant Secretary of EC Rajib Ahsan said.
The parliamentary seat became vacant following expulsion of Awami League minister Abdul Latif Siddique from the ruling party for his remarks against the Prophet (SM), Hajj and Tablig Jamaat.
On March 8 in 2015, Election Commission (EC)
cancelled the nomination papers of Krishak Sramik Janata League President (KSJL) Abdul Kader Siddique for Tangail-8 (Basail-Sakhipur) by-poll on loan default charges.
On February 4 this year, the High Court rejected a writ petition filed by Kader Siddique on October 20 that challenged the legality of the Election Commission’s decision cancelling his candidature in the Tangail-4 bypolls on the basis of loan defaults.
Now there are three candidates namely Awami League’s Hasan Imam Khan Sohel Hazari, Bangladesh Nationalist Front’s (BNF) Ataur Rahman Khan and National Peoples Party’s Imrul Kayes.
Ten aspirants, including four from Kader Siddique’s Krishak Sramik Janata League, filed nominations for contesting the by-election.
But three nominations only remained valid after scrutiny by the EC.
