Alleged terrorist Abdus Samad ‘Mamu’, who was arrested by the police from the city’s Mohakhali area on Wednesday, has been identified as the ‘second-in-command’ of Neo- JMB’s slain founder Tamim Chowdhury’s right hand.
“After death of several high-ranking leaders of JMB in the hands of law enforcement agencies, including CTTCU, the Neo-JMB was mainly organized under the leadership of Abdus Samad,” Chief of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crimes Unit [CTTCU] Monirul Islam said on Thursday.
In a major breakthrough, a team of CTTCU arrested three alleged terrorists – Abdus Samad alias Mamu alias Ashik, his father-in-law Zyadul Islam and Azizul Islam alias Mehedi Hasan alias Shishir from Mohakhali area. The CTTCU members also recovered one 9mm pistol, five rounds of bullet and 200 detenators from their possession.
“He [Abdus Samad ] took the charge of the organization after Sohel Mahfuz alias ‘haat kata Mahfuz’ was arrested. Besides, Azizul Islam being from ‘Mehedi family’ has been involved in militant activities for two years. He has also got training in militancy,” the CTTCU chief said.
“Besides, Samad’s father-in-law Zyadul Islam was involved in distributing arms and ammunition and explosives among the militants after collecting the consignments through Chapai Nababganj border,” he said.
Abdus Samad is hailed from Dinajpur. He took Fajil degree and joined JMB in 2010. He along with Tamim Chowdhury also formed Junad Al Tawhid Al khilafah and took charge as Commander and Second-in-Command. Later, a good number of Anasar-Al Islam members joined the organization.
In 2014, Tamim started working to form the Neo-JMB after abolishing the Junad Al Tawhid Al khilafah. Tamim was introduced with old JMB leader Mamumur Rashid Ripon and Sarwar Jahan through Mamu.
Samad, who was also an explosive expert, used to take major decisions along side with collecting members and fund for the organization. Basically, he was trainer of arms and grenade.
A few months earlier the CTTCU officials said that a hardcore militant taking a fake name ‘Ayub Bachhu’ was trying to organize Neo-JMB. After Wednesday evening’s arrest, it was proved that the militant was Abdus Samad, which was his organizational name.
According to CTTCU Chief, Tamim and Samad had played a big role in setting up a dozen of training camps in the city’s Kalyanpur and Mirpur areas.
Replying to a question, Monirul Islam said, “He [Mamu] did not admit about his direct involvement in any killing. Even, there is no information avaibale about his attachment in Holey Artisan incident.”
