Moejuddin Bachchu is a poor farmer and President of Majhipara Gono-Sangathan at Majhipara village in Panchgachhi union under Kurigram. Few months ago, he learned what and how they can get the government’s aid in a campaign program under ‘livelihood food security governance project.’
Then he took lease 0.4 acres of pond in the village. They applied to the Kurigram district coordinator, IAPP project of the Directorate of Agriculture Extension, seeking permission for cultivating Carp fishes as display using the united power of his Gono-Sangathan. IAPP came forward to his application aiming to ensure the food security among the poor in the region.
Under the displaying facilities he got young fish, fertiliser and feeds. Cultivation of fish has started changing his fate. Only a 0.4 acres of fish farming land has been displaying fancy too. He’s counting for his new expecting days. After talking with a fish farmer Moejuddin he told us that “Through this Gono Sangathan we’ve concerned about our rights. For this effort I got the opportunity of land leasing for fish cultivation. I will be solvent and can ensure the food security for the family by selling my farmed fish. And in my opinion if everyone can know about the all the privilege and facilities of the Government and can work hard – so the fate of the poor inhabitants of this territory will be changed.”
Biswajit Barman, facilitator IAPP Community Project, said, “I have been giving advice to Moejuddin’s fish cultivating as my routine work. I hope he may product about 800 t0 1,000kgs of fish work Tk 100,000. Continuous support of mine will remain. If some others come forward to cultivate fish to see the success of Moej, they will also get my support.”
It is mentioned that Gono-Sangathan was established with 165 poor farmers and fishermen on May 21 in 2013 at Majhipara village supported by European Union and Oxfam. This Gono-Sangathan was established by Jibika, an NGO working for advocacy among the poor farmers and fishermen regularly aiming to ensure food security in the region. It has been working hard to unite the poor community to eradicate poverty and ensuing food security. n
