After the loss of more than 80 lives in poll-related violence, the Election Commission (EC) has urged the Home Ministry to take measures to ensure peaceful voting.
In a letter on Monday, the commission asked the ministry to arrest listed and armed miscreants, recover weapons, increase patrolling and ensure security of electorates in the last two phases of the Union Parishad elections. So far, four phases of the six-phase election to the UPs, being held in party line for the first time, have been marked by deadly clashes and vote rigging. “We are taking all kinds of measures despite criticisms. We have also given necessary directives to
those involved in the process,” Election Commissioner Md Jabed Ali told bdnews24.com.
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad has so far held two meetings with heads of security agencies. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina also wrote to the EC before the third phase of the election on Apr 13 saying there should be no more ‘irregularities and violence’ in the polls.
