Academics and right activists at a ‘solidarity rally’ here on Thursday called upon international players, including the UN, to work out effective steps for the restoration of citizenship rights of Rohingyas.
They also urged the international community to take steps for a durable solution to the Rohingya crisis, and stop the slow burning genocide against the ethic group by Myanmar.
As part of a two-day international conference arranged by Refugee and Migratory Movements Research Unit (RMMRU), a research organisation, with the help of
Euro-Burma Office, the solidarity rally was brought out from the National Museum and paraded Central Shaheed Minar via Doel Chattar in the morning. Academicians, researchers and human right activists joined the programme.
Addressing the rally at the Central Shaheed Minar, RMMRU executive director Prof CR Abrar said Myanmar is guilty of committing the crime of genocide against Rohingyas. “The casualties of genocide could be even higher in the future, if proper steps are not taken right now to stop it.”
He said the Rohingyas are the world’s largest stateless people who have been stripped of the rights of citizenship, nationality and self-identity.
CR Abrar, a professor of International Relations department at Dhaka University, urged the global leaders to mount pressure on the Myanmar government for restoration of the citizenship rights and dignity of the Rohingyas.
