Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader says he expects the UN to take a ‘firm decision’ on the return of Rohingya refugees to Myanmar.
Quader was speaking at an event organised to receive donations from various individuals and organisations for the Rohingyas at the Hotel Cox Today in Cox’s Bazar on Sunday. The UN is working on Rohingya repatriation, said Quader. The government hopes the UN will arrange for the swift return of Rohingyas to Myanmar in a dignified manner.
“We want the UN to take a firm stance on the Rohingya repatriation issue in the face of a difficult situation,” he said. Over 600,000 Rohingyas have crossed the border
into Bangladesh, fleeing a violent military crackdown in Rakhine state on Aug 25. Bangladesh had previously been providing refuge to about 400,000 Rohingyas who had fled persecution in Myanmar in the past few decades.
The Bangladesh government says it is providing refuge to the Rohingyas on humanitarian grounds, but Myanmar will eventually have to take them back. Amid international pressure, Myanmar has agreed to begin bilateral efforts to repatriate the refugees based on a 1992 agreement between the two countries. Bangladesh has, however, made several proposals requesting the UN to engage in the proceedings.
