Take effective steps to make Buriganga pollution-free: PM

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has directed the authorities concerned to take effective measures for reclamation of the Buriganga river and making it free from pollution.The Prime Minister gave the directives while presiding over a meeting on reclamation of all flowing rivers including Buriganga around Dhaka city and introduction of circular road and river route surrounding the capital at her office on Sunday.After the meeting, PM’s Press Secretary A K M Shameem Chowdhury briefed newsmen.The Prime Minister said: “This is our project and we will have to implement it.”Sheikh Hasina said with the implementation of the project, it would bring a positive change in the environment of Dhaka city.The meeting decided that the Shipping Ministry will launch circular river route that will touch Ashulia, Amin Bazar, Sadarghat, Fatullah, Kanchpur and Tongi.The Roads and Highways Department and Bangladesh Water Development Board will construct the four-lane circular road including Eastern bypass around Dhaka City with the assistance of Bangladesh Army.The Prime Minister’s office will coordinate the construction of the circular road.With the introduction of circular road and river route, transportation of people and goods would be easier.Among others, Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith, Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu, LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Syed Ashraful Islam, Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Rashed Khan Menon, Water Resources Minister Anisul Islam Mahmud, Communications Minister Obaidul Quader, Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan, Environment and Forest Minister Anwar Hossain Manju, Land Minister Shamsur Rahman Sharif, State Minister for Finance M A Mannan, and State Minister for Home Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal attended the meeting.Besides, Cabinet Secretary M Musharraf Hossain Bhuiyan, Chief of Army Staff General Iqbal Karim Bhuiyan, PM’s Principal Secretary Abus Sobhan Sikdar and Press Secretary AKM Shameem Chowdhury were present on the occasion.
