UNB, Sangsad :
Urging BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia to refrain from the ongoing destructive activities, Finance Minister AMA Muhith on Tuesday requested Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to tackle the violence with an iron hand for the sake of the country’s economy and development.
The Finance Minister made the call in the House while taking part in the thanksgiving motion on the President’s speech.
“It’s a very regretful that when all people are taking part in development activities, only one woman (Khaleda) is putting barricade towards progress,” he
said. Claiming that unprecedented development in the country, the Finance Minister appealed to the BNP chairperson not to hinder the advancement of the country. “Let it rolls, refrain from destructive activities,” he requested Khaleda.
He also requested the Prime Minister, who was present in the House, to contain the ongoing situation with an iron hand.
Admitting that the violence during the countrywide blockade is hindering the desired economic growth, the Finance Minister said he is still hopeful of achieving 7 percent GDP growth in the current fiscal.
To overcome the present volatile situation, he pointed out two ways — Khaleda Zia’s good sense and Hasina’s iron hand.
He also questioned Khaleda’s loyalty saying whether it is towards the country or anywhere else. “We don’t know when good sense will prevail upon her.”
Claiming that Bangladesh is marching towards turning into a middle-income country under Hasina’s leadership, Muhith said the country will be freed from poverty by 2018.
He mentioned that 10-14 percent people under poverty line is normal in any country. “Since the poverty rate will decline at 12 percent in Bangladesh in 2018, Bangladesh will be freed from poverty,” he said.
In this connection, Muhith said the only strategy his government adopted to reduce poverty significantly in the last five years is to rise the internal demand. “Bangladesh is unique in the world where both the percentage of ultra poor and poor declined simultaneously.”
