Tabligh Jamaat factions clash in city: 30 injured

At least 30 people were injured when two factions of Tabligh Jamaat have clashed over taking control of a madrasa at Dhaka’s Bhatara area on Tuesday night.
The name of the madrasa is Al Madrasatul Moinul Islam madrasa in Chholmaed West Dhalibari area after the Esha prayers, Vatara Police Station SI Md Moniruzzaman said.
Confirming the metter on Wednesday, Dhaka Metropolitan Police Additional Deputy Commissioner (Badda zone) Syed Mamun Mustafa said “The clash took place on Tuesday night between followers of two scholars, Maulana Saad Kandhalvi group and Maulana Muhammad Zubair (Tabligh Jamaat) group.”
The injured have been sent to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital for treatment.
“The factions had been in conflict over taking control of the madrasa for a long time and both groups controlled the madrassa at different times. On Friday, it went under the control of Zubair group,” said the ADC.
“Saad group came to repulse the occupation on Monday night, and a clash erupted between them, but Zubair group were joined by locals,” said ADC Mamun.
“Some 150 people from Saad group joined the clash where Zubair group was enforced by the locals,” he said.
At one point, 30 followers of Saad group got stranded inside the madrasa and were later rescued by police.
Later, three platoons of police were deployed in the area to avoid any further untoward incidents, said the ADC.
He said, “The situation is calm now even though tensions were running high on Wednesday morning.”
Such incidents are a regular occurrence at the madrasa while a police team always remain ready to meet the imergency.
“The madrasa is run by a committee and they attacked members of that committee to take control of the madrasa,” Maulana Zubair told the media.
The followers of Maulana Saad could not be reached for comments over the matter.
