BNP-sponsored mayoral candidate of Dhaka North City Corporation [DNCC] Tabith Awal has urged the Election Commission to ensure his security during the election.
He sent the letter to DNCC Returning Officer Md Shah Alam on Monday afternoon.
The copies of the letter were also sent to Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmed, Election Commission Secretary Md Sirajul Islam, Home Secretary and police.
In the letter Tabith said: “I’m feeling insecure in this violent situation. I’m not safe without armed security. So, I urge you to take adequate security for my personal security.”
Tabith also referred some incidents of attack
and threatening on BNP leaders and councillors, including BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.
Earlier on April 21, Tabith Awal claims the attack on Khaleda Zia’s motorcade during the campaign proves the lack of security in Dhaka. He reiterated his demand for army deployment to maintain a “normal atmosphere”.
“We’re speechless after yesterday’s (Monday) incident. It drove home the point that Dhaka is not safe anymore,” Awal told reporters on Monday.
He said, the law and order situation never seemed worse than now. “The lives and properties of the people are not safe,” the mayor candidate added.
BNP chief Khaleda’s motorcade was attacked when she was campaigning for Awal at Karwan Bazar.
