Tabith Awal, who was the BNP mayoral candidate in Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) elections, has filed a petition with the election tribunal seeking cancellation of the gazette issued on February 4 and reelection in DNCC.
The petition was filed with the court of Dhaka’s joint district judge Utpal Bhattacharya on Monday, said Tabith’s counsel Barrister AKM Ehsanur Rahman.
Brrister Ehsanur said, “We filed the petition annexing the documents of irregularities, corruptions
and illegal practices happened in the DNCC elections from announcing the schedule till vote casting and publishing the result.”
“We demanded the cancellation of the gazette in which Atiqul Islam had been declared as the Mayor of the DNCC and sought re-election in the petition,” added the lawyer.
He said, they have annexed total 784 pages documents of irregularities and corruptions with the 238 pages petition.
Awami League mayoral candidates were elected in the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) elections held on February 1 last.
In the DNCC election, AL candidate Atiqul Islam got 447,211 votes to defeat Tabith Awal of BNP, who polled 264,161 by 183,050 votes.
Returning Officer Abul Kashem for DNCC announced the results around 2:45 am on February 2. He said the voter turnout was 25 percent.
The Election Commission on February 4 published the gazette of the results naming the newly elected mayors and councilors of Dhaka North City Corporation and Dhaka South City Corporation.
