A bumper production of Transplanted Aman (T-Aman) rice is likely in Rangpur agriculture region where farmers have exceeded the fixed farming target by 12.28 per cent this season.
According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources, the farmers have cultivated the crop in over 5.85 lakh hectares of land exceeding the fixed target of 5.21 lakh hectares by 64,039 hectares or 12.28 per cent more in the region this season.
The farmers are expecting to harvest the early, short duration and drought-tolerant variety T-Aman rice varieties like BRRI dhan33, BRRI dhan39, BRRI dhan56 and 57, BINA dhan7 and BU dhan1 in the region from the second week of October next.
According to the DAE sources, the government has fixed a target of producing over 14 lakh tonnes clean Aman rice from 5.21 lakh hectares of land this season in all five districts under Rangpur agriculture region.
Under the programme, 25,432 hectares of land were to be brought under cultivation of hybrid variety T-Aman to produce 83,927 tonnes rice, over 4.65 lakh hectares under high yielding variety to produce 12.46 lakh tonnes rice and 30,762 hectares under local variety to produce 51,372 tonnes Aman rice.
However, farmers have finally brought 29,689 hectares of land under cultivation of hybrid variety, over 5.24 lakh hectares high yielding variety and 31,313 hectares under local variety T-Aman farming this time in the region.
“The T-Aman plants are growing superbly now following frequent rainfalls in recent weeks amid favourable climatic condition and no major incident of pests’ attacks,” Horticulture Specialist of the DAE Khondker Md Mesbahul Islam told BSS today.
He said the recent floods damaged T-Aman crop on 5,548 hectares of land causing production loses of 14,867 tonnes of rice worth Taka 47.575 crore and Aman seedbeds worth Taka 20.10 crore on 4,070 hectares of land in the region.
“However, the farmers could exceed the fixed T-Aman farming target through bringing more land under cultivation of the crop following various effective steps taken by the government timely,” Mesbahul added.
Talking to BSS, farmers Echhahaq Ali and Aiyub Ali of Kathihara village, Golam Mostafa of Najirdigar village under Sadar upazila here said T-Aman plants were growing excellent following recent rainfalls after a temporary drought-like situation.
