Intern doctors at Bogra’s Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital are absent from work after four trainees were penalised for assaulting a patient’s relative.
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has suspended the internship of those four for six months, after which they can resume at a different medical college hospital.
After the news of the suspension was made public, no other interns had gone back to work since Thursday afternoon,
a nurse told this news agency.
Only the doctors were seen at work at the hospital around 10:30pm.
The hospital’s Deputy Director Nirmalendu Chakrabarty said, “I will speak about this tomorrow.”
Al Mamun, one of those penalised for the assault and the Bangladesh Chhatra League President of the medical college, said, “Don’t you know I am busy? I’ll talk later.”
An official at the hospital said on condition of anonymity that those four held a meeting at the interns’ hostel and took the decision on work abstention. The statement from the health ministry added that the suspended interns would have their professional certificates cancelled if they commit such actions in the future.
On Feb 19, Rauf Sikdar, who admitted his father at the hospital with heart ailments, was assaulted by intern doctors at the hospital. He claimed Naz, the on-duty intern doctor, flew into a rage when he asked her where the switch for the room’s fan was. An argument broke out when intern doctor Asif arrived and assaulted Sikdar before whisking him away to another room, where he was forced to do sit-ups 100 times holding his ears.
A video footage of Sikdar doing squats went viral on the social media, triggering a hail of criticism aimed at the doctors. Intern doctors went on a strike demanding security at workplace, but called it off 27 hours later.
