UNB, Dhaka :
A symposium on ‘Global Goals for Sustainable Development’ will be held in the city on today, marking the 70th anniversary of the United Nations.
United Nations Association of Bangladesh (UNAB) will host the event at Hotel Washington.
Secretary (Bilateral and Consular), Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mizanur Rahman will attend the function as the chief guest. UN Resident Coordinator in Bangladesh Robert D Watkins will also be present.
PKSF Chairman Dr Kholiquzzaman Ahmad will present the keynote address on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Bangladesh. UNAB President Justice Kazi Ebadul Hoque will preside over the event.
Two days back, the United Nations cancelled its programme to mark the UN Day and the UN’s 70th Anniversary in Dhaka on ‘security’ grounds, an official told UNB.
Robert Watkins cancelled invitations sent to diplomats and high dignitaries for the programme scheduled to take place on Sunday in a city hotel.
Meanwhile, the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, in a message marking the UN Day, said the 70th anniversary is a moment to recognise their dedication – and to honour the many who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
“To mark this anniversary, monuments and buildings across the world are being illuminated in UN blue. As we shine a light on this milestone anniversary, let us reaffirm our commitment to a better and brighter future for all,” he said.
