Election symbols were allocated among the seven aspirant mayoral contestants of Rangpur City Corporation [RCC] poll on Monday.
Former Mayor and AL candidate, Sharfuddin Ahamed Jhantu got the party symbol- boat, BNP candidate Kawsar Zaman Babla- paddy sheaf, JP [Ershad] candidate, Mostafizur Rhaman Mostafa- Plough SPB candidate Abdul Kuddus- ladder, National People’s Party candidate Selim Akhter-Mango, Islami Shashantantra Andolan candidate ATM Golam Mostafa- Hand fan and JP leader contesting as independent candidate Hossain Mokbul Asif Shahariar- Elephant.Some 211 general councilors and 65 women’s reserved candidates were also allocated symbols.
The candidates started their campaign bringing mike in every parts of the city soon after getting symbols. Supporters of candidates have been using different slogans with lyrical tones to drum up support in favour of their candidates.Regional Election Commsiioner, Suvash Chanda Sarker said, some 7 candidates were vying for mayoral race and 211 general councilors and 65 women’s reserved were vying for 33 wards of Rangpur City Corporation[RCC] poll on December 21.
On December 20, 2012 the first ever RCC election was held and AL-backed candidate, Sharfuddin Ahamed Jhantu, was elected the first mayor. There are some 3,93,994 voters in 33 wards of Rangpur city. Of them 1,96,356 are male and 197,638 are female voters. The commanding area of the city is 203.6 square kilometres. Votes will be cast in some 193 polling centres.
