Sylhet Correspondent :
The much talked about water treatment plant, established at the city’s suburban Kushighat, is yet to reach its targeted production mainly due to technical hitch and poor navigability of the nearby river,.
Official sources said, The local Public Health Engineering (PHE) department built the water treatment plant at a cost of Tk. 1.320 billion for supplying 28 million litres of water everyday, but it couldn’t achieve the daily target because of multifarious problems. At present it supplies only 8 million litres a day.
“This is why the PHE department couldn’t hand it over to the Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) as yet,” said an official of concerned department. The authority concerned, sources said, has changed the deadline several times.
“The PHE couldn’t meet the people’s requirement of water as yet,” said Ataur Rahman, a businessman in the city’s Mohajan potti area adding that it changed the schedule time and again despite tremendous sufferings of people special during the summer.
“There is none to question them why it is being delayed,” said Shahidul Islam of Modhushahid area.
Same was the view of many others. The PHE, under its Sanitation and Water supply programme started works on establishing the plant in 2007. Despite frequent change in schedule, they couldn’t yet meet the city dwellers’ demand as the experimental production is yet to reach the target. They can produce maximum 70 to 80 million litres of water a day, sources said.
SCC Chief Engineer Nur Azizur Rahman said the PHE couldn’t make the plant ready to supply the desired quantity of water. He pointed out that the plant was on experimental run and can supply about 8 million litre of water daily where as they are supposed to ensure supply of 28 million litres daily. “We hope they would be able to hand over the plant by the end of December this year,” he said as the PHE had informed.
According to SCC, they are now supplying half of the daily demand of 80 million litres of water from 38 production wells.
An official of the PHE, Sylhet said most of the works on the plant were completed long ago, but due to some technical reasons and poor navigability of the nearby river they could not supply the optimum amount. “We are trying our best to overcome the problems and complete rest of the work as soon as possible to ensure the supply of targeted 28 million litre per day,” said the official.
Handing the plant over to the SCC would be possible in a month or two, before the formal opening of the plant, said an official of concerned department.
