Authorities are going to inaugurate a mega water treatment plant soon to benefit the dwellers of the 125 square kilometre area in Sylhet city and its adjoining areas.
The capacity of the treatment plant is estimated 28 Mega Litter per Day (MLD) while 1 MLD = 10^6 L/d. MLD is a unit of purifying litters or waste from water.
The plant is situated on around 8 acres land near Kushighat Bazar in the Eastern part of the city.
Sources said the construction work of the project was started in March 2010 with allocation around Tk 132 crore from Local Government, Rural Development and finished in June, 2014 and went on experimental purifying since then.
The project has two purifying units with a total of 28 MLD capacity running 20 hours out of 24 hours using surface water from the Surma River.
The construction work of water lines in Northern part of the city is almost finished while the link pipes over the Surma River that connected the plant with the water line of Southern part of the city will be finished very soon, official sources said.
Executive Engineer of LGRD Mohammed Hanif told “The plant went on tail purification around six months ago finishing almost the major works. Around 28 Million Liters water will be supplied from the plan purifying the surface water from Surma River every day.”
Hanif aslo said that they would use alternative ways in three months of winter season when the plant won’t be able to get sufficient water from the Surma River.
“The treatment plant will be handed over to the Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) on January 2016,” Hanif added.
Most of the city dwellers have been suffering badly as the authority failed to supply even fifty per cent of the demand for drinking water, source said.
SCC source said, the authority supplies about 30 million litre water daily through its 30 production wells and an old water treatment plant against demand for 80 million litre, which is only 30 per cent of the total demand. But officials claimed, about 25 per cent of the supplied water is also being misused by the subscribers.
SCC acting Chief Engineer Nur Azizur Rahman told that, the demand of pure water for the increasing population in city will almost fulfill as a sufficient quantity of pure water will add by the new treatment plant.
