Though almost all restrictions imposed with a view to tackling the surging infections of Covid-19 in Bangladesh have been relaxed, the prices of daily essentials are still on the rise taking toll on the low and limited income people.
While visiting different kitchen markets in the Sylhet City, this correspondent found that onion is being sold at Tk 50 per kg, which was 45 last week. The price of sugar has increased Tk 5 per kg, which is now Tk 80. The prices of broiler chicken and loose soybean oil have also risen. Per kilogram broiler chicken is now being sold at Tk 130, which was Tk 120 two or three days back.
In the retail market, coarse rice is being sold at Tk 50-55, fine varieties Miniket Tk 62-65 and Nazirshail Tk 65-70. Prices of different spices have also hiked. Experts said that low income people are immensely suffering due to price hike of essentials. They blamed the syndicate in the market behind the price hike.
The commerce ministry on Wednesday held a meeting with the traders over the price scenario of essential commodities and asked them not to make excessive profit on the pretext of the price hike of commodities on the international market.
