SUST student stabbed
A female student of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) was stabbed by a mugger in Surma residential area near BGB gate in Sylhet city early Sunday. The injured is Saima Alam, a student of civil and environmental engineering department of the university. Sources at the university said Saima was stabbed in the left leg by an unidentified mugger when she reached the university dormitory from Sylhet railway station at about 5:30am. She was later rushed to MAG Osmani Medical College and Hospital. University proctor Alamgir Kabir said provost of the first female student hall of the university Zayeda Sharmin informed the proctorial team of the incident. ‘We have visited the inured student and now she is doing well.’
Youth arrested for violating
A young man has been sent to jail for deflowering a woman who was marriable. Identified as Jahangir Ahmed (28), the accused was arrested from a hotel in Sylhet with the rape victim on Tuesday afternoon after Kotwali police was informed by Nation emergency helpline 999. According to police a 22-year-old girl was raped at a residential hotel in Kotwali police station area of Sylhet. She was rescued after a friend of the girl called 999 at the time of the incident. Kotwali police sub-inspector (SI) Shidul Das said that he rescued the victim from a room in a residential hotel and arrested the accused Jahangir. On Wednesday, he was sent to jail through the court, the SI added.
COVID vaccine for students begins
The vaccination program for school students, aged between 12-17, against Covid-19 has been inaugurated in Sylhet. Deputy Commissioner (DC) M Kazi Emdadul Islam and SCC Mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury inaugurated the vaccination program at Sylhet Women’s Government College on Wednesday. The students of the district will be vaccinated with first doses.At the time, Civil Surgeon (CS) Dr Premanondo Mondol, College Principal Shamima Akter Chowdhury, teachers, students, parents of local schools and colleges along with journalists of different media were present. According to sources, 451 students of Sylhet Women’s College were vaccinated against Covid-19 on the inaugural day.
BNP on hunger strike demanding Khaleda’s treatment abroad
Sylhet District BNP has started a seven-hour hunger strike to press home their demands of allowing party chief Khaleda Zia to go abroad for advanced treatment. As part of a countrywide programme, hundreds of leaders and activists of the party and its affiliate bodies gathered in Sylhet Registry field on Saturday morning. BNP Chairperson Advisor Khondokar Abdul Muktadir attended the hunger strike program as chief guest. BNP Central Executive Committee and District No. 1 Convener Committee member Abul Kaher Chowdhury Shamim, presided over the hunger strike which started at 10:30 am at the historic registry ground of the city. Sommilito Peshazibi Parished Sylhet District President Dr. Shamimur Rahman broke the hunger strike of the leaders and workers by drinking water at 1.30 pm.
