Joyeeta Award
The awards went to five women from each of four districts and to an additional five at the divisional level Altogether 25 women in Sylhet have been honoured with the Joyeeta Award for their success in diverse fields by overcoming obstacles and challenges.
The Women Affairs Department Office and Sylhet Divisional Commissioners Office jointly organized the award-giving ceremony at Poet Nazrul Auditorium in Sylhet town on Wednesday. State Minister of Women and Children Affairs Fazilatunnessa Indira handed over the awards, while Sylhet Divisional Commissioner Md Moshiur Rahman presided over the event.The awards went to five women from each of four districts and to an additional five at the divisional level.The following awardees received the award for economic successes, contributions to social development, successes in education and career, overcoming trauma of torture, and successes in parenting, in that order:
Minara Begum, Asiya Khanam Shikder, Dr Nasrin Sultana Lucky, Saleha Begum, and Shamsunnahar Chowdhury from Sylhet.Saleha Begum, Samina Chowdhury Moni, Shwarnali Dey, Chhaya Rani Chowdhury and Rani Das from Sunamganj.
Selina Akhter, Sheikh Suma Zaman, Rani Modak, Sahida Akhtar Rezia and Nurunnahar Begum from Habiganj.Rawshan Ara Begum, Rumana Akhtar Rubi, Nazmin Akhtar, Hajera Akhtar, and Rita Dutt from Moulvibazar.
US Commander in
Police Training
Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) training workshop has been organized on strategies for using social media. The workshop will be held at Sylhet in-service training center from 9am from Wednesday .The instructor in the workshop was Mike Parker, a retired commander of the American Police.The training workshop was held under the US Department of State Bureau of Counter Terrorism and the US Department of Justice, the International Criminal Investigation Training Assistance Program.In the workshop, 6 of the SMP police stations 30 of SI rank took part. Additional Deputy Commissioner (Training) of Sylhet Metropolitan Police Mohammad Zabedur Rahman, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Media) Jaden Al Musa and Additional Deputy Commissioner (Sadar) Shahriar Al Mamun were also present on the occasion.
Rohingya youth held
Habigabj police on Friday night detained a young Rohingya man who came to the district on Wednesday after unauthorisedly leaving Balukhali Rohingya Camp in Coxs Bazar.
The detained, Azizul Mostafa, 27, of Block 1 at Balukhali camp at Ukhiya in Coxs Bazar, came to Habiganj to ask for charity for treatment of his ailing father Zafar Ahmad, said police. Habiganj Sadar police officer-in-charge Mashuk Ali said that on information, they detained the refugee at about 8:00pm on Friday.
The detained was sent to the Ukhia Shelter Camp in police custody Saturday morning, the police officer said.
Theatre groups hold procession with alphabets
Sammilita Natya Parishad Sylhet, a combine of local theatre troupes, on Saturday brought out a procession titled Barnamalar Michhil in Sylhet city to welcome February, the month of language movement.
The procession began from in front of Sylhet District Council at Bandar Bazar in the city at around 10:00am ended at Central Shaheed Minar at Chowhatta after parading different city streets.
Cross-section of people participated in the procession carrying decorated Bengali alphabets welcome the month recalling the 1952 Language Movement that forced the Pakistan government to recognise Bangla as one of the state languages.
Sylhet deputy commissioner Kazi Emdadul Islam, Udichi Shilpi Gishthi district unit president Arash Ali, Muktijoddha Sangsad district unit commander Subrata Chakrabarty Jewel, city unit commander Bhabatash Roy Barman, politician Shafiqur Rahman Chowdhury, senior reporter Al Azad, Sammilita Natya Parishad Sylhet president Mishfaq Ahmad Mishu and its general secretary Rajat Kanti Gupta, among others, attend the procession.
Later, activists of local cultural trope Chhanda Nrityalaya presented a dance-drama at the Central Shaheed Minar marking the first day of February.
