Pvt univ staff killed in Sylhet road crash
A private university staff was killed in a road accident at Shamimabad in the city on Sunday night. The deceased was identified as Rustom Ali, 36, an office assistant of Leading University. Akhtar Hossain, officer-in-charge of Shahporan (R) police station, said the accident took place around 10pm as the microbus hit him in front of Sonargaon Community Centre while he was crossing the road, leaving him dead on the spot.
11 held with hemp
Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in a drive arrested 11 people along with 140-gram hemp from Dakhshin Shurma upazila on Saturday night. The arrestees are Abul Hossain Mia, 25, Syed Aziz, 28, Md Khairul Miah, 25, Shahadat Hossain Shuvo, 18, Md Shohel Alam, 28, Iran Miah, 34, Md Ferdous Ahmed, 25, Md Mobarak Hossain Selim, 25, Md Kazol Miah, 26, Jasim Uddin Sajib, 22 and Md Elim Ahmed, 23. A team of RAB-9 conducted the drive in Bharthkhola Mosque Market area of the upazila headquarters around 8:30 pm and detained them along the hemp, said Md Moniruzzaman, senior assistant director of Rab-9. The arrestees were handed over to Dakhshin Surma Police Station.
Those acted against party in SCC polls to face music: Quader
Referring to the party’s debacle in the Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) polls, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader on Thursday said actions will be taken against the leaders and activists who acted against the party. ‘Those who were engaged in self-destructive activities during the SCC polls won’t be spared. They’ve to face exemplary punishment,’ he said while addressing rally organised by district and city units of Awami League at Registrar ground marking the National Mourning Day. Quader, also Road Transport and Bridges Minister, further said, ‘I haven’t come here to deliver speech, but to look into the allegations raised about the SCC election.’
