Sylhet Correspondent :
About 30,000 people of Sylhet Division are being dropped from the list of ultra-poor brought under the Tk 10 rice programme.
The district and division level officials in the administration and Food Department are in great trouble over the decision as a good number of elected representatives have expressed their commotion in this regard, sources informed.
In line with directives from the Food Directorate, the local authorities listed 272,146 ultra-poor for the food assistance programme just weeks ago. Each of them was given 30 kg for Tk 10 per kg rice in September and October. The figure include, 52,330 in Sylhet, 51,009 in Moulvibazar, 77,281 in Habiganj and 91,526 in Sunamganj district.
But, all of a sudden, the officials were asked to reduce the number of beneficiaries by 30,000 in Sylhet and Moulvibazar districts.
An official in the Food Department, Sylhet, said, “We are in much trouble with the decision in reducing the number of listed ultra-poor’. On the basis of directives from the directorate, we have sent letters to district officials recently. However, a number of UP chairmen had already expressed their inability to cut the beneficiary numbers down”.
