Sylhet flood situation worsens: 50,000 marooned

Flood situation in the Sylhet district has deteriorated again as the Surma and Kushiara rivers are overflowing due to onrush of water from the upstream and heavy rainfall in last 72 hours, leaving 50 thousand families marooned.
Water Development Board (WDB) officials said, surma is flowing 16centimeters above its danger mark while kushiara 25 centimeters over the red level at 6am on Saturday.
At least four upazilas were submerged by the flood waters, sources said.
The affected areas are Companiganj, Guainghat,Jointapur and khanaighat upazila in the District , local sources said.
DC of Sylhet Rahat Anwar said, At least 50 thousand people are affected by fresh flood. The situation will be improved if the onrush of water will not come from upstream.”
Besides, all government and primary schools are declared close due to flood situation.
Monsoon rain continued for the second consecutive day on Saturday across the country, including Sylhet , leaving the normal life in disarray.
Low-income people, especially the day labourers, suffered much in the city as rain disrupted their normal pace of life.
The rain slowed vehicular movement on different city streets and triggered traffic gridlock, causing sufferings to private office goers and students.
The met office recorded 117 mm of rainfall in Sylhet from 6am to 12pm yesterday.
Due to heavy to very heavy rainfall, landslides may occur at places over the hilly regions of and Sylhet divisions.

Staff Reporter, from Rangpur adds: Incessant rain has disrupted normal life in Rangpur district and its adjacent areas during last few days.
Many areas in the city have been submerged with knee-deep water causing misery for the city dwellers. Most of the people have confined themselves inside the room and very few transports are seen in the city streets, demanding higher fares from the passengers.
The attendance of students in schools and colleges has remained also thin.
The day labourers, farm labourers, hawkers and rickshaw pullers living from hand to mouth are the worst sufferers as it has become so difficult for them to find work to earn their livelihood.
Mohammad Ali, In-charge of Rangpur Meteorological Office, said there was around 300 mm of rainfall recorded during last 72 hours in Rangpur.
Heavy downpour has submerged several low- lying areas of the city and its neighbouring areas. The situation has made the lives of thousands of people miserable as most of the low- lying areas have become severely waterlogged due to torrential rain.
Poor maintenance of the canals and drains some of which were narrowed owing to land grabbing has further aggravated the situation, locals alleged. The most affected areas include Tantipara, Adarshapara, Alamnagor, Hajipara, Jummapara, Kukrul, Honumantala, Khamar, Nurpur, Ganeshpur, Guratipara, Babukhan, New Shalbon, Khasbag, KamaKachna, Kherbari etc where most of the houses went 2-4 feet under water.
According to sources many city areas have gone under 2- 4 feet deep water due to heavy rainfall and residences and business establishments in some low laying areas were submerged with rainwater mounting sufferings of the people manifolds.
The affected people are suffering a lot as their houses are now under knee-deep water specially office going people school going students are the worst sufferers.
The hardship of poor people living at the thatched houses has been intensified. The slum dwellers living beside the railway tract are the worst hit by the incessant rainfall.
Meanwhile, standing crops including transplanted Aman paddy and vegetables on vast areas have been submerged due to frequent rainfall. Fishes from different water bodies have also been washed away owing to torrential rain.
