Farmers in Sylhet Division have started farming of Transplanted Aman. They would try gaining highest from the crop this time in a bid to recoup the huge loss they had suffered during the last Boro season by the repeated crop damage by floods, a number of farmers said.
With required rains, the farmers expect to get maximum crop this season, informed the Deputy director of the DAE’s divisional office Dr. Mamun Ur Rashid.
The region was critically hit by the disastrous calamity during the last Boro season, which is considered the lone cash crop of the vast low-lying tracts of Sunamagnj, Habiganj, Moulvibazar and Sylhet districts.
DAE reports read, there had been a colossal loss of Boro crops worth in the last Boro season in the region. It was almost unusual, officials informed. However, the crop loss was much higher, common farmers claimed while demanding incentive programme for the coming Boro season.
A target has been set at 371,564 hectares for the division with a target to produce 952,821 tonnes of rice. The target area includes 293,379 hectares of high yielding varieties and 78,185 hectares of local varieties.Out of the targeted seedling plots on 21,191 hectares, already the farmers had set seedbeds on 3601 hectares. Transplantation would be started soon.
Against a target of 334,409 hectares last year, T Aman was cultivated on 375,800 hectares in 4 districts of the division, the official added.
Most of the farmers are now on the field engaged in preparing lands for the much-desired paddy crop, the official said.
Farmer Ansar Ali of village Turukbag in Golapganj upazila of Sylhet said on. “If everything goes well, we hope there would be a good crop this time.”
